Summer officially begins Memorial Day Weekend in Washington DC, where millions of tourists come to town to celebrate the holiday.
If you want to start the holiday a few days early then check out the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard and the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” on May 23rd as they present an hour long military pageant know as Twilight Tattoo. The performance is free and open to the pulic and is based on a first come first seated basis. This event is located on Summerall Field on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Va.
All of the historical attractions will be open for everyone to enjoy, and there will be plenty of free events like the National Memorial Day Concert on Sunday May 27th 2012 from 8pm to 9:30pm; gates open a 5pm so get there early to get a good spot.
Performers at the concert include The National Symphony Orchestra, U.S. Army Chorus, U.S. Navy Band, The Soldiers Chorus, and the U.S. Singing Sergeants. Gary Sinise, and Joe Mantaegna will co-host the event.
If you want to avoid the crowds on Sunday then you can attend the full dress rehearsal on Saturday May 26th at 7:30pm. Gates open at 5pm; once again get there early to get a good spot.
Don’t forget to take the family to the Memorial Day Parade on Monday May 28th 2012 at 2pm, to see the marching bands, floats, and people representing all branches of the military.
If you happen to see thousands of people riding around on motorcycles, don’t worry; Rolling Thunder will also be in town, their mission is to educate the public about American prisoners of war left behind.
Rolling Thunder events include a candle light vigil at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Friday May 25th 2012 at 9pm. On Saturday May 26th from 11am to 8pm there will be a Tribute Stage near Constitution ave and Henry Bacon Dr., NW with entertainment to commemorate Rolling Thunder’s 25th Anniversary. The Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally and musical tribute to Veterans with Nancy Sinatra, Gordon Painter, Doug Stone, Sammy Saddler, Loch Rannoch Pipe and Drum Band will be on on Sunday May 27th, at 1:30pm near the Korean Memorial.
