Mother’s Day weekend is the perfect time to be in Washington DC, because there are so many  cheap and free things to do in this great city, so finding somewhere fun to take mom won’t be a problem especially if you are on a budget.

 

Here are 10 cheap and free things to do with mom in DC  this weekend.

 

1. Mom will certainly appreciate attending a free performance at the Kennedy Center, on Saturday May 11th you can see The Virginia-based dance company offers a performance to promote educational and culturally enhanced awareness of life and on Sunday May 12th the gifted students from the D.C. community perform a program of classical works.

2. If your mom likes birds then take her to Bird Fest at the Rock Creek Park Nature Center, This free, family-friendly event will feature guided bird hikes, bird banding demonstrations, live birds of prey, a variety of fun and educational games and crafts for kids, interactive exhibits by conservation organizations, live music and Latin American dance performances, and a bird-themed planetarium show. Saturday May 11th from 9am to 3pm.

3. If  mom likes trains, then take her to, The National Train Day event at Washington DC Union Station will feature free kids’ activities sponsored by Chuggington, interactive and educational exhibits, model train displays and giveaways.  Visitors will have the chance to tour private luxury rail cars, freight and commuter trains, as well as current Amtrak equipment.

4. On Sunday May 11th take mom to see a free performance from “The President’s Own United States Marine Band“, at the John Philip Sousa Band Hall, at the Marine Barracks Annex, mom can sit back, relax, and listen to the sounds of , Joseph Haydn, Atar Arad, Claude Debussy, Eugène Ysaÿe, and Felix Mendelssohn.

5. Sunday should be a nice day so make  a picnic basket, find a blanket, and take the mom to Gravelly Point, to see the planes land and take off from Reagan National Airport, she can enjoy the amazing view of the Potomac River.

6. If you want to treat mom to the theatre in DC, then find out how to find tickets for half price at some of the best theatres in Washington DC.

7. Even though the Cherry Blossoms are gone, you can still take mom to the tidal basin and treat her to a paddle boat ride.

8. Mom can truly enjoy the beauty of unique plants and flowers at the United States Botanic Gardens. From roses to orchids, the rainforest to the Mid-Atlantic, rare and endangered plants to the latest in home gardens, you will find a world of plants and environments in our permanent exhibits and gardens. Any time of year, you’ll see something beautiful in bloom at the U.S. Botanic Gardens.

9. Take mom to the Smithsonian Gardens to see the Butterfly Habitat Garden, she can see a variety of plant species that can be used to attract butterflies to any garden.

10.  Take mom to any one of the 19 museums in DC, from the Freer Gallery of Art, to the American History Museum, mom will truly enjoy you taking the time to find fun, cheap, and free things to do in DC.

This Monday May 6, 2013 at 6:30pm,  “The Misfits“ will be featured, Co-starring Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter.

 

When a disillusioned divorce befriends an aging cowboy, a heartbroken mechanic, and a worn-out rodeo rider, she experiences her first taste of freedom and passion through their live-for-the-moment lifestyle. It’s the weekend, and it’s going to be beautiful, so here are a few last minute cheap and free things to do in the DC metro area!

National Theatre

Bring the kids to the National Theatre this weekend to see,  Brian Curry: Magic and Mischief, Saturday May 4, 2013.

Smithsonian’s Air & Space Museum

If you are looking for something to do with the kids this weekend take them to the National Air & Space Museum for Family Day, Space Day: Living and Exploring in Space on Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

 

 

DC Yoga on the Mall

 If you are looking for something to do that’s stress free this weekend you can check out Yoga on the Mall; a free all level outdoor community class on Sunday May 5th from 11am to 1pm. Be sure to bring the kids because there will be a 20 minute class introducing yoga to kids of all ages starting at 10:45am. Don’t forget to bring a mat!

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (events begin at 11am)
This will be held at the beautiful Constitution Gardens
by the Vietnam Memorial (closest Metro Stop is Foggy Bottom)

 

 

Rockville Town Square Arts Festival,

May 4-5, 2013, over 170 artists will sell unique art, ceramics, paintings, jewelry and more. There will also be free live entertainment.

National Harbor Wine and Food Festival,

Celebrate great wine and delicious food at the 6th Annual Wine & Food Festival at National Harbor, May 4-5, 2013,  1-6pm.

Bound by the sanctity of the confessional, the guilt-ridden priest becomes the prime suspect in this taunt psychological thriller.

If you don’t have any plans and you are looking for something to do, you can check out Boeing’s Army Ten Miler, Health and Fitness Expo, October 19th-20th, 2012 , from 10am to 7pm at the DC Armory.

 

The expo showcases more than 85 exhibitors and interactive displays. Make sure to take advantage of the free massages, yoga boot camp classes, and  free samples.

 

If you are interested in learning about running, and exercise tips there will be several experts there that you can talk to.

 

Don’t forget to bring the kids so they can learn simple tips to stay fit and eat healthy.

 

This event is FREE and open to the public.
